About Us:

Phillip Tobacconist & Supermarket is a locally owned and operated convenience retail business serving the Canberra community with a wide range of groceries, beverages, and household essentials. In addition to its supermarket offerings, the business also holds a current retail licence to sell tobacco products in accordance with ACT regulatory requirements. This dual operation requires close oversight to ensure both customer service excellence and strict compliance with all licensing, health, and workplace regulations.

With ongoing customer demand and extended trading hours, we are now seeking a dedicated Retail Manager to oversee operations and ensure our store continues to meet the highest standards of efficiency, compliance, and service.

Position: Full-time

Salary range: $ 70,000 to $ 80,000 per annum + Superannuation

As the Retail Manager at our supermarket, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating the full opportunity of store operations at our Phillip location (C11/15 Bowes Street, ACT 2606). You will oversee both front-of-house and back-of-house activities, ensuring seamless day-to-day operations while driving business performance, maintaining compliance, enhancing customer satisfaction, and fostering a positive workplace culture. This role is hands-on and requires strong commercial acumen, leadership capability, and a commitment to operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

·Lead and coordinate daily operations of the supermarket and tobacconist, ensuring smooth service delivery and compliance with ACT retail and tobacco licensing requirements.

·Manage inventory, stock rotation, supplier orders, and budget control to maintain availability and reduce wastage.

·Supervise, roster, and train staff to deliver excellent customer service and uphold store standards.

·Monitor financial performance including sales reporting, cost management, and budget targets.

·Implement local marketing and promotional strategies to drive customer engagement and repeat business.

·Ensure accurate POS operations and compliance with cash handling and reporting requirements.

·Maintain high standards of hygiene, store presentation, and workplace safety.

Provide customer service leadership, resolve escalated issues effectively, and foster a positive and welcoming shopping environment.

About You:

·A Diploma in Business, Retail Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

·Minimum 2 years’ experience in a retail supervisory or management role.

·Demonstrated knowledge of stock control, loss prevention, and compliance requirements (tobacco retail experience desirable but not essential).

·Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team.

·Proficiency with POS systems, Microsoft Office, and retail reporting software.

·Organised, proactive, and customer-focused, with excellent problem-solving skills.
